BiLL MAHER: i'M SWiSS

Maher takes on a wide range of topics that include presidential politics, gay marriage, morality and "values," legalized marijuana, and rap lyrics. Ruffling plenty of feathers--as usual--Maher's ranting is not just controversial but singularly insightful and witty.

Perhaps it is just my fascination with nordic culture, but I found this ad both clever and relevant thanks to a strong concept on the one hand, and a globetrotting production on the other.

JUNiOR SURVEY 2009

Last semester's survey may well have been the last of its kind. Sure, covering an 8 x 4 foot wall is a pain in the ass, not to forget costly both financially and health-wise. But it does allow for faculty, students and whoever is interested really, to drop by and take a peek at what Pratt's COMD is up to.

There is rumored talk of a digital survey this year, presented directly to the faculty. This would allow students to receive the much requested feedback and put presentation skills to the test, which does in fact resemble real world circumstances more than the former junior surveys.

YOUR DOCTOR iS A DRUG DEALER

For those on ADD or ADHD medication: beware!

Just because some charlatan in a white coat prescribes a (relatively) cheap drug does not make it any more effective or safe than alternative treatments. Quite to the contrary, the risks of drugs such as Ritalin increase by the very nature of treatments, which are often times of an undetermined period. This can often lead to years of mental and physical "abuse".

NEW TRENDS

According to certain theories of New Age philosophy, the more one focuses on not falling ill, having an accident, failing a challenge; the more likely this individual is to create exactly that situation.

Theories of positive affirmation suggest it is much more effective to concentrate one's mental energy on willing optimistic scenarios such as "I am healthy, I am safe, I am successful."

Rather than attempting to avoid a negative outcome conjured up out of fear, identifying a desired outcome gives a clear objective of one's actual will, and grants the focus needed to obtain it. Fear of success is the only obstacle.
